My mixed-media reliefs are inspired by architectural remains of the Ancient Rome. Fragments of temples, villas, and scenographic walls are interpreted by creating layered constructions. The reliefs depict elements and rhythms found in Roman art and architecture. This body of work is concerned with process. I find it both challenging and rewarding integrating structural forms with painted and textural surfaces. The pieces are derived from photographs gathered while travelling throughout Italy. Applications of wood, plaster, clay, wallboard compound, and pigments are used in concert. The art embraces the literal and the abstract, transporting the viewer to a rich and mysterious period of time. |
